An ambitious redevelopment project is set to transform various railway stations in northern Odisha, with the prestigious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This prominent initiative by the Indian Railways aspires to upgrade the architectural design, technological integration, and passenger amenities, bringing a new era of modernisation to the nation’s railway infrastructure.

The scheme encompasses the railway stations located at Keonjhar, Barbil, Jaroli, Rairangpur, Betanoti, and Badampahar. Speaking on the initiative, an official from Indian Railways remarked, “This redevelopment will greatly improve the travel experience for the people of Odisha and contribute to the State’s growth.”
These efforts are in step with the continued drive to furnish Indian Railways’ stations with contemporary facilities that fulfill the expectations and demands of the passengers, while seamlessly incorporating advanced technologies.
Economic and developmental impact
Railway projects have created 15,000+ construction jobs and aim to boost tourism by 40% at heritage stations. Improved logistics at industrial stations like Jharsuguda Road are projected to increase freight handling by 25%. Odisha's railway infrastructure has received Rs 78,000 crore total investment since 2014.
Project implementation progress
As of April 2025, 28 stations have completed detailed project reports. Puri Station's Rs 385 crore transformations are 60% complete, featuring a Jagannath-style façade. Bhubaneswar's multimodal hub integrates metro, bus, and taxi services through elevated walkways. Phase I (25 stations) achieved 45% completion, with full operationalisation targeted for 2026.
Key stations and design themes
Prominent stations include Puri (heritage conservation), Bhubaneswar (multimodal hub), and Baleshwar (Jagannath Temple-inspired design). Second-phase additions feature industrial hubs like Paradip and Talcher. Architectural designs integrate local cultural elements, such as using temple motifs and regional craftsmanship.
Modern amenities and features
Redeveloped stations will feature roof plazas, free Wi-Fi, executive lounges, and lifts/escalators. Sustainability measures include solar energy systems and water recycling plants. The scheme implements 'One Station One Product' kiosks to showcase local artisans.

Scheme with estimated investment
Odisha is redeveloping 59 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with an estimated investment of Rs 2,379 crore. This includes major stations like Puri, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack, with individual station budgets ranging from Rs 13-35 crore. The initiative is part of a national Rs 41,000 crore infrastructure push covering 1,309 stations.
