A 22-year-old IT professional was allegedly raped by an unidentified man who entered her Pune apartment by pretending to be a courier delivery agent, police said on Thursday.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde, the accused clicked a selfie using the woman’s phone, which captured her back and part of his own face. He also left a threatening message warning her against disclosing the crime, claiming he had taken her pictures and would circulate them on social media. The message ended with the chilling note: “I will come again.”
The incident occurred around 7.30 pm on Wednesday in a residential society located in the Kondhwa area of Pune, Maharashtra. The suspect is currently absconding, and a search operation is underway, officials said.
Police said the woman, an IT graduate from a local college and employed with a private company, was alone at home at the time as her brother was out of town. The accused arrived claiming to deliver a bank-related document.
He asked for a pen to sign the paperwork and as the woman turned away to get it, he entered the flat and latched the door, police said.
Investigators believe the man may have used an intoxicating substance to render the woman unconscious and are checking if a spray or similar item was employed.
The suspect took a selfie using the victim’s phone and left a message warning her not to speak about the assault. He threatened to leak the images online and said he intended to return, police added.
A sketch of the accused is being prepared and surveillance footage from CCTV cameras in the housing society is being examined to trace his movements.
The woman has undergone a medical examination.
Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 64 (punishment for rape), 77 (voyeurism), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation).
