The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is not going to be a general elective subject in universities and autonomous colleges in Odisha from this year as the State higher education department has expressed reservations to implement a proposal in this regard.
Saswat Mishra, Principal Secretary, Higher Education department has cited 'COVID-19 related dislocation' as a reason for not taking up the proposal and said it will be taken up for consideration next year.
"Due to COVID-19 related dislocation, we could not take up your proposal for consideration this year. Your proposal will be taken up for consideration next year," Mishra wrote to Commodore Somen Banerjee, Dy. Director General NCC, NCC, Directorate, Odisha.

In July this year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again asked Universities to take appropriate steps for the inclusion of NCC as an elective subject.
Here’s the detailed proposal of the NCC:
-NCC has developed NCC General Elective Credit Course design that is uniform and universally implementable. This is in conformity with UGC policy on CBCS. The proposed model align with NEP 2020, thereby strengthening NCC training.
- The Credit Course to be introduced in all universities and autonomous colleges across India which are currently having NCC Troops/companies as allotted by Headquarters DGNCC, including private colleges which have been allotted NCC under Fully Self-Financed Scheme (FSFS). This will ensure that Credit Course do not exceed the current capacity of NCC to provide trainers and training infrastructure. This will also ensure smooth transition from present system to Credit Course System.
-All students who enrol as NCC cadets will immensely benefit by obtaining academic credit for NCC training in addition to acquiring valuable NCC 'B' and 'C' certificates.
- More students as cadets will be able to avail employment incentives and benefits offered under various Central and State Govt Schemes to NCC cadets.
