The Orissa High Court has directed the Crime Branch of Odisha Police to investigate into a fake accident insurance claim by registering fraud case against those who availed the insurance cover from a company in the matter.
While hearing a case involving death of a labourer in a tractor accident in Puri in 2015, the Court has passed the order directing the Crime Branch DSP to initiate probe and take appropriate action against the fraudsters.
According to report, a labourer identified as Ratnakar Swain of Potala village in Puri was allegedly killed in a tractor accident during work in 2015.

The deceased family had moved to the Labour Commission seeking compensation for accidental death.
On August 16, 2019, the Commission, after hearing the case, had directed a private insurance company to pay Rs 11.29 lakh to the victim’s family as compensation.
However, the company had challenged the Commission' order in the High Court, alleging that the said tractor was not involved in the accident that led to the death of the labourer.
During preliminary hearing, the High Court had stayed the Commission order and directed the Crime Branch to probe whether the particular vehicle was involved in the incident.
The Crime Branch, after conducting a thorough investigation, had submitted a report to the Court mentioning that the tractor had no role in the accident.
Based on the report of the Crime Branch, the High Court, while concluding the hearing, has quashed previous order of the Labour Commission and directed the Crime Branch to register fraud case against those involved in the case.
In its judgement, the Court has also clarified that the amount paid by the Insurance Company should be refunded with interest within 15 days.
