Odisha Assembly Passes 3 Key Bills On Day 2 Of Monsoon Session

The Odisha Assembly on Thursday passed three bills including the Odisha University of Health Sciences Bill, 2021 on the second day of the monsoon session.

The bill has been cleared in order to streamline the administrative and educational system of all medical and para-medical colleges in the State by establishing an Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS). All medical colleges and hospitals, nursing and para-medical colleges of the State will be brought under the ambit of the varsity. 

Speaking about the passage of the bill, State Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das said, “Earlier, various medical colleges and hospitals, nursing and paramedical institutions in the State were affiliated to different general universities. With the passage of the bill, those institutions will be brought under the ambit of the single university.”

“The bill will ensure proper teaching, training and research works in various medical courses. Over 500 medical institutes like nursing, pharmacy, allied medical sciences and physiotherapy will be well-regulated,” he added.

The State Assembly also passed the Odisha Land Rights to Slum Dwellers (amendment) Bill, 2021 amid protests from Opposition benches. As per the bill, 30 square meters of land will be given to those who have been living in slums for a long time. 

The House also cleared the Odisha Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill 2021 today amid chaos.
