Odisha seems to be rapidly turning into a drug hub. From brown sugar, ganja to fake Covid-19 medicines, the illegal drugs trade is on an alarming rise in the State.
Odisha Police had seized over 7 kg of brown sugar between 2013 and 2019. However, between 2000 and 2021, the State Crime Branch STF has seized more than 34 kg of brown sugar.
"STF seized over 34 kg of the drugs last year which was much more than what Odisha Police had seized in the previous five to six years," informed DGP Abhay.

"I got addicted to the drug and lost many things from money to job. Then, I told my father about it and now got admitted to this drug rehabilitation centre," said Bigyan who is now getting treatment at a drug rehab.
On the other hand, though the illegal trade has been often linked to Kolkata, police are yet to nab the masterminds.
Former Police DG Sanjeev Marik said that the exponential rise in the drugs trade need to be curbed at the earliest. And for this, cooperation of all is needed, said Marik.
