E-Mulakat Facility Launched At Berhampur Circle Jail In Odisha

The facility is being provided through the National Prisons Information Portal (NPIP) to help prisoners consult with their family members, advocates and relatives through hassle-free virtual mode meetings.

“Using E-Mulakat service the family members, relatives and advocates can schedule Mulakats (meetings) with the prisoners by following a few simple processes. The staff at the jail have been given training in this regard,” said Upadhay adding that the facility will be beneficial for both the families and the prisoners as at present physical meeting is restricted due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The high-ranking official also took stock of the various facilities at the jail.

“Funds have been sanctioned to increase the capacity of the jail by setting up 100 more male wards. Construction work for this new project has already started. Hopefully, it will be finished in the next 7-8 months,” he said.

As per sources, various facilities at the sub-jails under Berhampur Circle Jail will also be augmented soon. Security arrangements will also be tightened in the sub-jails.

“We have requested the Odisha government to allow prisoners work at petrol pumps like other states to make them self reliant,” he added.

Earlier, the E-Mulakat services have been launched at various jails in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and other parts of the State.
