For the first time, two smart or electronic toilets (e-toilets) were set up in the Silver City of Cuttack on Wednesday. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) in association with ERAM scientific solutions have set up the toilets at Madhupatna and OMP Square under MES initiative.
CMC Commissioner Ananya Das formally inaugurated the toilets and food kiosks.
The e-toilets are expected to cater to the need of the people who come to the city from other places. The toilets will be run by women self-help groups (SHGs) and people can use the facilities by paying a minimal pay of Rs 1.

“Finally a toilet you can always count on to be clear,” reads a caption on the toilets. The e-toilets use rapid clean technology for flushing the toilet after every use.
“In order to transform the sanitation and livelihood conditions, CMC, in association with ERAM scientific solutions, has set up food kiosks & e-toilet facilities at Madhupatna & OMP Square under the MES initiative. Commissioner CMC Ananya Das inaugurated the facilities today,” the CMC tweeted.
“Identified SHG groups have been given proper training and have been put in charge of the entire eco-system. The objective is to empower marginalised communities by ensuring their participation in the drive,” it added.
Speaking to the media after dedicating the e-toilets to the public the CMC Commissioner said, “We chose OMP and Madhupatna area for setting up the e-toilets because the movement of people via bus and other transport is more in these areas. Therefore the demand for toilets is more. The e-toilets and integrated vending zone will be run by women. The profit from the shops will be used for maintenance of the e-toilets.”
“The integrated project approximately costs Rs 14 lakh. We will observe its success and sustainability and will replicate it in other places in the city accordingly,” she added.
