A few hours after a dangling kite thread slashing the throat of a biker, causing his death at PIrbazaar area in Cuttack city on Sunday afternoon , a man suffered severe injury after his neck got entangled in a kite string in Puri town in the evening.
The injured biker, identified as Bhanjabihari Patra of Kundhaibenta Sahi of Puri town, is undergoing treatment at Puri district headquarters hospital (DHH). He is said to be out of danger.
Sources said, Patra was on his way to Badadanda on a bike to fetch medicine for his sick son. Oblivious about the kite string dangling at Malijaga near Medical Square, Patra was speeding as he was in a hurry. As he was passing Malijaga, the deadly thread got entangled around his neck, causing serious injuries.
A biker, who was trailing Patra, rushed a profusely bleeding Patra to the DHH with the help of a policeman. He was admitted to the surgery ward where he underwent an operation to stitch the wound.
Earlier in the day, a biker died after a dangling Manja entangled around his neck at Pir Bazaar in the city. The deceased was identified as Jayant Samal of Bhayarpur.
Notably, with the rising cases of people suffering injuries due to hanging kite strings becoming a matter of concern, the Commissinerate Police on Monday carried out raids in Cuttack city and detained a trader who was allegedly selling banned Manja for kite flying in Jagatpur area.
In January 2016, a girl was killed over the same reason, prompting the Orissa High Court to direct the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar police to take steps to stop the sale of Chinese Manja in kites.
Manja is a specially manufactured thread with coats of glass dust. This type of thread is popular among kite flyers because they can easily snap the thread of other rival kites.
