At least six juvenile offenders reportedly escaped from an observation home in Berhampur of Ganjam district in the early hours of Monday, exposing the poor security measures at the government-run facility.
While the whereabouts of the escapees are yet to be ascertained, a complaint has been lodged by the observation home authorities at Baidyanathpur police station.
The superintendent of the observation home, Rameswar Rout said there were 112 inmates at the facility. Children with conflict with the law are usually produced in juvenile justice board and sent to the observation home.
This is not the first time such an incident reported from the government observation home. Earlier in May 2020, 27 minor boys had escaped from the facility after attacking the staff.
The inmates had attacked the staff members with knives and firewood, injuring four including Superintendent Sanjay Kumar Mohanty before 27 of them escaped.
Similarly, seven juveniles had fled the observation after attacking the guard in May 2020.
