Social media has redefined friendship. The number of followers or friends often becomes a metric of popularity, yet these digital ties may lack emotional depth. We react to life updates with emojis, but how often do we have real conversations? Birthday wishes pour in via stories and texts, but few pick up the phone anymore. The result? A feeling of being surrounded, yet strangely alone.
False Sense of Understanding
While platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp make staying in touch easier, they also encourage curated lives. We see filtered joy, not everyday struggles, leading to a false sense of understanding. Passive scrolling replaces active engagement, and constant comparison erodes genuine connection.
That said, social media isn't the villain. It can foster real bonds when used intentionally. Virtual friendships, support groups, and shared communities have created meaningful relationships for many.
What Is True Closeness
True closeness comes from vulnerability, empathy, and time—elements algorithms can't replace. It's important to balance our online presence with offline efforts- calling a friend, writing a note, or spending time together in person.
Friendship thrives on effort, not just connectivity. Social media can support that, but it can never substitute the human warmth behind a genuine connection.
