National Education Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. The day is observed in his name to remember the outstanding contributions of Azad in building the education system in the country. He was the first Education Minister of independent India and worked in the same position between 1947 and 1958.

Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad is credited with making the overall education system in the country better so that it is accessible to almost every common person in India. That is the reason he is respected and praised even today.

He made extreme efforts to build educational institutions in India and that is why the Ministry of Human Resource Development which is now called Education Ministry decided to observe his birth anniversary as the National Education Day from November 11, 2008 onwards.

Apart from these facts, there is another reason for celebrating National Education Day every year. The Indian government intends to enlighten the citizens on the importance of education and how it can positively impact the development of the country and its overall well-being. The day proposes to develop a spirit of learning and its significance among countrymen.

Education is one of the most important factors that determines the progress of the country. That is why the Indian government has been stressing the need for everyone to get educated and has tirelessly been helping people to become aware of its importance.

Many schools and programs are launched in villages and underdeveloped areas to attract people who are not eager to pursue education. It is the fundamental right of every Indian citizen and everyone should take advantage of it and benefit from these initiatives.

On National Education Day, the Education Ministry organises several promotional programs to encourage more people to embrace education.

This year the theme of National Education Day is “Embrace Innovation” and rightly so as advancement in digital and information technology has necessitated that every person should not only be literate but computer and technology literate as well.
