Actor Anushka Sharma, now one of Bollywood’s most successful stars, once faced a disheartening moment early in her career that brought her to tears.
In a candid 2018 interview on the show Look Who’s Talking With Niranjan, Anushka opened up about how she cried "like a child" after losing the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut to Asin.

The Award That Broke Her Heart
The incident dates back to 2009 when Anushka and Asin were both nominated for the Best Female Debut category at the Filmfare Awards.
Anushka had made her acting debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the romantic drama Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, directed by Aditya Chopra. Asin, on the other hand, was nominated for her performance in Ghajini, the Hindi remake of her earlier Tamil hit.
Anushka admitted that she had gone to the awards function with full confidence that she would win.
“I am very upset they didn’t give it to me. Because I had made my calculation, you know. Main calculate karke gayi thi that, ‘See, Asin has done the film in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada maybe... She is already an actress for many years. Obviously usko toh nahi denge.’”
She continued, “Debut toh mera hua hai, main nayi hun, maine nayi film mein kaam kiya hai. I need the encouragement. So I was convinced I’m going to get it. But they gave it to her. I was very sad. I was very upset. I clapped, I clapped. I cried like a child—as if I didn’t get a certificate in school.”
Anushka’s Career Since Then
Though she missed the debut award, Anushka’s career took off soon after. She went on to star in critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), PK (2014), Sultan (2016), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), and Sanju (2018). She also launched her own production company, Clean Slate Filmz, through which she produced films and series like NH10 and Paatal Lok.
Anushka was last seen on screen in Zero (2018) alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. Her upcoming project, Chakda Xpress, is a sports biopic based on the life of Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The film has completed production, but a release date is yet to be announced.

Her Personal Life With Virat Kohli
Off-screen, Anushka’s life has been equally eventful. She met cricketer Virat Kohli in 2013 during a commercial shoot, and after a brief breakup, the two reconciled and tied the knot in a private ceremony in Italy in December 2017. The couple welcomed their daughter Vamika in January 2021 and their son Akaay in February 2024.
