Aamir Khan has taken a break from the movies as an actor at least for a year after his last movie Laal Singh Chaddha tanked at the box office. Since the movie was produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, Aamir incurred heavy losses and reportedly had to return some amount to the distributors.
It was the second biggest flop in the career of Aamir whose earlier movie Thugs of Hindostan also was a dud. But it was produced by Yash Raj Films and it took a long time for the production house to recover the losses.
While Aamir has been one of the biggest superstars of the 90s along with Salman and Shah Rukh Khan, he had a bittersweet relationship with the YRF. He has worked in multiple movies with India’s leading film production house including Paramparaa, Fanaa, Dhoom 3, and more.
Fanaa was a love story based on the life of a blind girl and a terrorist. The movie was expected to do very well as all its songs were big hits even before its release. It was for the first time that Kajol and Aamir were pairing on the big screen which was an additional USP of Fanaa.
However, at the same time, the Bollywood superstar was actively supporting Medha Patkar’s Narmada Bachao Andolan. The Gujarat government was against this movement and hence banned the release of Fanaa in Gujarat which is one of the biggest territories generating revenue for Bollywood movies.
Even though Fanaa was a big hit across the country, YRF lost a big deal because it could not be released in Gujarat. Taking the blame for this loss on himself, Aamir reportedly returned some amount of his paycheck to Yash Chopra.
Now, with Laal Singh Chaddha, it is the second time that he had to take the same action and take the blame for the huge losses on himself.
