But despite being so talented and receiving tons of accolades and appreciation for his work in the movies, there have been times Vijay Sethupathi was disappointed because politics interfered with the art. Talking about the disappointment that he felt when Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy was chosen as India’s entry to the Oscars over his movie Super Deluxe, Vijay Sethupathi said, “I was shattered but it is politics. We know something happened. It’s not because I was in that film. Even if I were not in that film I would have wanted that film to go there.”

“Something happened in between and I don’t want to talk about that. It’s unnecessary,” Sethupathi had added. Super Deluxe was a big South Indian hit of that year and had already won many national and global awards and hence many film lovers expected it to be the official Indian entry at the Oscars’. But as Vijay Sethupathi said something did happen and it was Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy which was presented to the Academy Awards jury.

However it did not even receive a nomination because many critics believed that the movie was derived from 8 Mile, a Curtis Hanson movie released in 2002. Super Deluxe was an entirely different take on the life of a transgender that revolved around the lives of a young angry boy, an unfaithful wife, and a transgender woman played by Vijay Sethupathi.
