Actors and actresses have to change their attitude, and style and even relax their demands to match the changing times. It is so important for even the biggest superstar to stay relevant and emerge successful film after film that they are forced to do things that earlier they were wary of.
Hot item numbers are trend
Decades ago Helen or Bindu doing an item number was a big trend. These actresses were used as spice in the entire commercial masala. A few decades later, leading Bollywood actresses themselves started doing item numbers. They were paid hugely and the song was even highlighted constantly as the major draw during the promotions.
Be it Aishwarya Rai Bachchan ’s Kajrare, Priyanka Chopra Jonas' Ram chahe leela chahe, or Katrina Kaif’s Chikani Chameli, all these songs had a big superstar actress doing an item number. While most of these songs revolved around the lead actor and a few of them were raunchy they still were not vulgar. But now things have changed.
While Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan danced with Ash in Kajrare, Salman Khan danced with Malaika Arora in Munni Badnam Hui, but the fun and entertainment quotient was retained at the core.
Allu Arjun’s O Antava changed so many things
Allu Arjun and Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s O Antava from Pusha: The Rise was one item number that crossed the boundaries and introduced a cheap and vulgar dance number between the item girl and the lead hero. The song was very famous and was one of the highlights of Pushpa 1.
While it is a typical South Indian item number, since Pushpa 1 became a big hit in Bollywood, filmmakers in B-town also thought that such a song will improve the attraction for a movie. A similar sexy number Besharam Rang was included in Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s Pathaan and it created a lot of uproar.
Fans have seen SRK doing romance but he rarely indulged in vulgarity. At one time he was even averse to doing kissing scenes on the big screen. But Besharam Rang saw him and Deeps doing steps that hinted at cheap vulgarity.
Will Salman Khan follow the current trend?
Salman Khan has always maintained no kissing clause in his contract and to date, he has not broken it. He is one Bollywood superstar who has always ensured that there is no vulgar content or scenes in his movies. Two songs from his upcoming movie Sikandar have been released and both seem to be quite decent.
Now that his career is going downhill, will he resort to the new techniques of doing vulgar item numbers like other leading actors or will he stick to doing content that everyone can watch with family? It seems highly unlikely that Bhaijan will ever do something just for success as he has an entirely different approach towards entertainment which can be full of fun and masti but it can never cross the line of decency.
