Rishab Shetty's 33-year-old Kantara co-star dies due to heart attack during celebrations

Rishab Shetty, actor and director of Kantara: Chapter 1, expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of his co-star Rakesh Poojary.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, Rishab wrote, “Dear friend... be reborn again. Your role in Kantara and the smile that lingered on your face during those moments will always stay fresh in my heart. Your absence is irreplaceable.” Mourning the loss, he added that Rakesh was not just a colleague but someone who left a lasting impact on everyone around him.

Sudden Loss During Celebration

Rakesh Poojary, aged 33, passed away in the early hours of May 12, 2025, after suffering a severe heart attack. The tragic incident occurred during a friend’s mehendi ceremony in Nitte, Karkala taluk, Udupi district. He reportedly collapsed while speaking to a friend and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A case of unnatural death has been registered at Karkala Town Police Station.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Rakesh rose to fame as the winner of Comedy Khiladigalu Season 3 in 2020, after finishing as runner-up in Season 2. He was admired for his comedic timing and charismatic screen presence. Apart from television, Rakesh had acted in Kannada and Tulu films including Pailwaan, Idu Entha Lokavayya, Petkammi, and Ammer Police. He was also a member of the Chaitanya Kalavidaru theatre group.

Role in Kantara: Chapter 1

Rakesh had recently completed shooting his scenes for Kantara: Chapter 1, the highly anticipated prequel to the 2022 hit film Kantara. He was reportedly playing an important role alongside Rishab Shetty. The film is slated to release in cinemas on October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.

Condolences From the Film Community

Production house Hombale Films and several artists from the Kannada industry expressed their condolences. Actress and Comedy Khiladigalu judge Rakshitha wrote, “The ever-smiling Rakesha… my fav Rakesha… the sweetest, kindest, loving person… Namma Rakesha… will miss you mange.” Fans and colleagues alike mourned the loss of an artist known for his warmth and energy.

Earlier Incidents on Set

The tragedy follows a series of unfortunate events related to the Kantara set. Days earlier, a junior artist drowned in the Kollur Souparnika River due to strong currents. Another minor accident involving a bus carrying Kantara crew members was also reported, though no injuries occurred.
