Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, locked its release date for Indian theatres. Initially scheduled for October 18, 2024, it will now hit screens on January 24, 2025, as per an update shared by Bollywood actor-director Farhan Akhtar on social media.
Notably, the animated movie is extremely unique as it takes direct inspiration from Japanese anime and is widely regarded as an Indian-Japanese anime movie.
Bending traditional Indian storytelling with Japanese anime techniques and directed by Koichi Sasaki, Ram Mohan, and Yugo Sako, the movie first premiered in 1993. It was initially showcased at the 24th International Film Festival of India but was never released in cinemas but gained popularity through television reruns.
The movie's latest version includes new dubs in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, along with its original English version. The film is being distributed by Geek Pictures India, AA Films, and Excel Entertainment, co-founded by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
Renowned screenwriter V Vijayendra Prasad, known for his work on Baahubali and RRR, has creatively adapted the new version to resonate with contemporary viewers while preserving the essence of the epic.

Social media users reacted to the news with joy and anticipation. “Childhood just made a comeback,” wrote one excited user under the Instagram announcement post while another followed with “First-day first show” and “I was waiting for this for a long”.
