Ramesh Sippy's timeless classic Sholay remains one of the most loved and most-watched movies even after 49 years of its release. Recently, one-time screening of Sholay was held and the excitement surrounding the cult classic was evident as the fans flocked to the venue in large numbers. Notably, earlier in 2004, Sholay was remastered and shown again to packed theatres in India. The movie that initially failed to impress the audience later emerged as a monumental success of the era. Even after several decades, the iconic dialogues, punchlines, scenes, songs and characters remain afresh in the minds and hearts of movie lovers.
As per reports, Sholay went on to run in theatres for six years and sold 15 crore tickets in India, during its initial release. Remarkably, the film sold an additional 3 crore tickets in India during its rerelease.
Not just in India, Sholay received immense love globally, particularly in Russia, where it sold 6 crore tickets. Moreover, the film's popularity extended to Europe, North America and the Middle East, taking the total ticket sales to a staggering 25 crore worldwide.
