When Nayak: The Real Hero released in 2001, it didn’t shatter box office records but grew into a cult classic over the years. Directed by S. Shankar and co-starring Rani Mukerji, the film stood out for its bold political satire and high-octane storytelling. Anil Kapoor’s performance as Shivaji Rao- a journalist who takes up the Chief Minister’s seat for a single day- remains one of his most memorable roles. Interestingly, before Kapoor came on board, the role was first offered to two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

As Nayak clocks 24 years, Anil Kapoor reminisced the role that defined him.

Anil Kapoor’s Latest Revelation

Marking the anniversary, Anil took to social media to share throwback memories. He revealed that the role had first gone to Shah Rukh and Aamir but expressed gratitude that it eventually came to him. In his words, 'some roles define you', and for Kapoor, Nayak remains one such milestone.

The actor posted a series of pictures on Instagram, including one from the film’s audio release in 2001, where he stood alongside his Trimurti co-star and music maestro AR Rahman.

In his post, Kapoor revealed that the film was first offered to Aamir and Shah Rukh. He wrote, "First offered to Aamir & Shah Rukh, but I knew I had to live this character... and I’m grateful Shankar sir trusted me." (sic)

He also recalled a powerful compliment from SRK. He wrote, "I'll always cherish Shah Rukh's words on that stage: 'This role was meant for Anil.' Moments like these stay forever." (sic)

Why Aamir and Shah Rukh Said No

Reportedly, director Shankar first approached Aamir, but their collaboration didn’t materialize. Shankar later admitted they faced a 'communication gap' and couldn’t find common ground.

Shah Rukh, meanwhile, was initially receptive and even accepted a symbolic signing amount of one rupee. Yet, he declined the project, explaining that he had just played a TV reporter in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and didn’t want to repeat himself so soon.

Kapoor’s Persistence Pays Off

With both stars stepping away, Anil Kapoor pursued Shankar for the role. His persistence, professionalism, and enthusiasm won the director over. What followed was a performance that became a career-defining moment. Shankar later called casting Kapoor a 'gamble that paid off'.
