The Krrish Franchise: India’s First Superhero Saga
In the early 2000s, Bollywood had never seen a full-fledged superhero film. Hollywood was producing iconic superhero movies like Spider-Man and X-Men, but in India, the genre was unexplored. That changed when filmmaker Rakesh Roshan introduced audiences to Koi... Mil Gaya in 2003, unknowingly laying the foundation for what would become India’s first superhero franchise—Krrish.
The Beginning: Koi… Mil Gaya (2003) – A Sci-Fi Breakthrough
It all started with Rohit Mehra, a developmentally challenged young man, played by Hrithik Roshan . Rohit gains super-intelligence after befriending an alien named Jadoo, who bestows him with extraordinary abilities. The film blended science fiction with emotions, and its success proved that Indian audiences were ready for something new.
But this was just the beginning. Rakesh Roshan had a bigger vision—he wanted to create India’s first superhero.
Krrish (2006) – The Birth of a Superhero
Three years later, Krrish took the story forward. Rohit’s son, Krishna Mehra, inherited his father’s superhuman abilities, thanks to Jadoo’s intervention in the past. Raised in isolation by his grandmother, Krishna is unaware of his powers until he meets Priya (played by Priyanka Chopra).
As Krishna steps into the outside world, he encounters Dr. Arya (played by Naseeruddin Shah), a scientist with sinister plans. To protect his identity while fighting evil, Krishna transforms into Krrish, donning a mask and a flowing black coat. With this, India finally had its own superhero.
The film was a massive hit, loved for its high-octane action, emotional depth, and Hrithik Roshan’s incredible performance.

Krrish 3 (2013) – A Battle Against Evil
After a long wait, Krrish 3 continued the saga. Rohit Mehra, now a scientist, and his superhero son, Krrish, face their toughest challenge yet—Kaal, a villain with deadly powers, played by Vivek Oberoi. Kaal, along with his mutant army, threatens to destroy humanity, and Krrish must stop him.
This installment expanded the franchise into the superhero vs. supervillain realm, introducing Kaya, a shape-shifting mutant played by Kangana Ranaut. With high-end VFX, thrilling action sequences, and a deeper emotional core, Krrish 3 further cemented the franchise’s place in Indian cinema.
