The Odisha Board of Secondary Education today released the schedule for the Summative Assessment examination of Class 9 Students. As per the schedule released, the first such exam will begin on November 22.
The examinations will be conducted in two sittings – from 9AM to 10AM and from 11AM to 12PM.
Earlier, the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) had announced the new assessment system under which four formative (short) and two summative assessments of students will be conducted in an academic year. The four formative assessments will be held in the second week of September, the first week of November, the second week of January and the second week of March.

This new pattern of assessment/evaluation system was developed after the Board faced difficulties in conducting the annual examination of class 10 students during the pandemic.
The board had then adopted an alternative evaluation system to award grades to students, which stirred up more controversies.
The students will appear for the examination carrying a total of 40 marks. A total of 40 marks have been equally divided between objective and subjective questions. The objective part will have 20 multiple choice questions carrying 1 mark each (Total 20 marks), while the remaining 20 marks will be of long questions.
BSE President, Ramashish Hazra said that the new format has been introduced this year and all the stakeholders, including headmasters, district education officers, were sensitised and trained on the new system. The officials were also asked to ensure that students and their parents are also made aware of the new assessment format. As per plans, every year four formative assessments and two summative assessments will be held.
Going by the schedule, majority of schools have completed the first formative assessment. Now the schools will hold the first summative assessment for which the Board will send the question papers for the Class 9 students.
BSE vice-president, Nihar Ranjan Mohanty said that the summative assessment of Class 9 students will be held for three days and the students will have to undertake the exam in 6 subjects.
“The students will be given question-paper-cum answer booklet to answer in the assessment exam. The evaluation will be held in neutral schools which will be selected by District Education Officers and detailed guidelines on the selection of neutral schools have been fixed. The evaluation will start from November 23, 2021 and the process will be completed by November 30, 2021,” said Mohanty.
