Two bike-borne youths posing as fortune tellers robbed gold and diamond ornaments worth lakhs of rupees from a woman at Bada Bazar in Jalweswar area of Balasore district on Tuesday.
The woman has been identified as Jaya Dey, a resident of Baghajatin area in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. Jaya had come to Jaleswar to visit her paternal family.
Dey claimed two unidentified miscreants decamped with a gold chain and earnings along with two diamond rings from her worth over Rs 3 lakh.
She alleged the two youths, riding on a motorcycle, came to her near Bada Bazar and started describing her future. They told her that there was an evil eye on her family and her son might meet his death soon.
“The prediction worried me and I requested them to suggest some remedial measures to get rid of the misfortune. I told them that I would do the ‘upchar’ after going back to Kolkata,” stated Dey.
“They told me to hold some camphor in my two palms and walk 51 steps forward. They also asked me to take off my gold ornaments and keep it in a bag. I accordingly peeled out the ornaments and kept them in my purse tightly under my arms. At the same time, when I started walking forward with the camphor, one of them snatched the purse and ran away,” narrated the victim.
Based on the FIR lodged by the victim, Jaleswar Police has started an investigation into the matter.
