What first appeared to be a tragic case of a sudden heart attack during a Navratri pooja in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor has now evolved into a shocking murder probe.
Deepak Kumar, a 29-year-old railway technician, suddenly collapsed at his home while participating in a religious ritual. Initially, his wife, Shivani, informed relatives that he had suffered a heart attack.
While Deepak's family was devastated by the unexpected loss, they didn’t initially suspect foul play. They began preparations for his funeral, planning a quiet farewell. However, since Deepak was a government employee, the family insisted on an autopsy before proceeding with the final rites.
The postmortem results delivered a startling twist: Deepak had not died of natural causes but had been strangled. Following the revelation, police launched an investigation and arrested Deepak’s 27-year-old wife, Shivani.
Authorities believe she may have committed the crime with the help of an accomplice. According to Deepak’s family, the motive behind the alleged murder could be Shivani’s intent to secure her husband’s railway job after his death.
“A case has been filed against Shivani and an unidentified individual. Further legal steps will follow based on the investigation,” informed Sanjeev Vajpayee, SP (City), Bijnor, as quoted by TOI.
Deepak, a native of Mukrandpur village in Bijnor, had been living with Shivani and their six-month-old son in a rented home in Najibabad’s Adarsh Nagar. The couple had married on June 17, 2023. Before joining Indian Railways in March 2023, Deepak had served in the CRPF in Manipur.
Family members also revealed that there had been ongoing tensions between Shivani and her in-laws. Deepak’s brother, Piyush, told authorities that Shivani had even physically assaulted their mother on several occasions. Their mother, Pushpa, backed the claim and alleged that Shivani had murdered Deepak with help in order to gain his government job.
