Woman jumps into well with 9-month-old son over family dispute; infant dies
A woman along with her nine-month-old son allegedly jumped into a well over a family dispute on Monday, resulting in the infant's death.
The shocking incident was reported from Khamar Sahi under Narasinghapur block of Cuttack district.
Sources said, there had been frequent quarrels between Rama Das and her family members. On Monday, Rama took an extreme step. She, carrying her son, jumped into a nearby abandoned well in an attempt to end both lives.
However, the neighbours immediately contacted the Narasinghapur Fire station. On being informed, a team of fire personnel reached the spot and fished out the woman and her son. But by that time, the baby had already died. However, the woman is out of danger, sources added.
“As her husband, who works in Angul, refused to come to the house, she jumped into the well carrying her son. This happened when I was away to buy groceries,” said the deceased child’s grandmother.
When contacted, Jodum Police Station IIC, Sarat Chandra Sethi said, “Today evening I was at the police station. It was 6.40pm when I was informed that a woman with her son jumped into a well at Balisahi Nuagaon Khamar Sahi. A team immediately rushed to the spot. Later, I reached the village. By the time we reached, the woman and the body of her son had been fished out. We are investigating to know the exact reason behind such an extreme step.”
