In an ironic twist that has shocked many in the state capital, the wife of a constable from Odisha’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) has been arrested on the charges of impersonating a police officer and defrauding a couple of over Rs 8 lakh in Bhubaneswar.
The accused, Sanjukta Bhuiyan, cleverly used her proximity to the police force—being the wife of an SOG constable—to build a web of lies. She posed as a senior police officer, donning her husband’s uniform for photos, and used these to create a convincing persona on social media platforms.
Initial Probe Findings:
Through this deceitful identity, she befriended one Bishnu Prasad Muduli, a resident of Chandaka in Bhubaneswar, and his wife Rashmita Muduli. What started as casual chats quickly turned into deeper trust, as Sanjukta began exploiting the relationship by making false promises of assistance in official matters and financial returns.
Over time, the unsuspecting couple transferred Rs 8.75 lakh to her account, unaware that they were being taken in by an elaborate scam. Once they realised the truth, they lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
Acting on the complaint, cyber police launched an investigation and arrested Sanjukta. Sources said that she had been using her husband's police credentials to gain credibility and manipulate victims with confidence and charm. It is alleged that initially, cyber police officials tried to hush up the matter.
Her arrest has sent shockwaves through the security establishment, especially since she belonged to the family of an SOG jawan. The irony that someone from such a disciplined background would abuse the trust and prestige of the uniform has left many surprised.
Police are now probing if this was an isolated incident or if more people have fallen prey to her fraudulent schemes. They have also issued warnings to the public to be cautious about people claiming official designations online.
