Undertrial prisoner on run kills grandmother, attacks two more persons in Jagatsinghpur

In an unfortunate turn of events, an under-trial prisoner, who was on the run for the past year, killed his grandmother in the Balikuda area of Jagatsinghpur district. The accused has been identified as Jibanjyoti Sahu.

As per reports, Sahu was earlier arrested in 2020 for allegedly raping a minor girl and was subsequently lodged in Alipingal jail. However, Sahu escaped from the prison in April 2022.

On Wednesday, Sahu visited his uncle’s place at Gadeigiri and allegedly attacked his grandmother with a sharp weapon. His grandmother died on the spot. The exact reason behind the attack is still unclear.

It is alleged that Sahu later went to the house of the minor victim and attacked her mother and a relative. Both the injured are now undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The accused Jibanjyoti Sahu has been detained and further investigation is underway.

“The accused has killed his grandmother. We have detained the accused. The body has been sent for post-mortem. The weapon has been seized,” said IIC of Balikuda Police Station, Salil Pradhan.
