In yet another theft incident in Bhubaneswar, unidentified miscreants employed a cunning distraction technique to allegedly commit a robbery, making away with cash and gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 30 lakh.

The crime has been reported from the Paikanagar locality, falling under the jurisdiction of Nayapalli Police Station.

“My sister stays in the house along with some other members in the house. But they had left for some other relatives' place as they were not feeling safe because my sister had gone on a religious trip. The miscreants have looted gold ornaments and cash from the house after entering the house from the terrace,” said a family member.

The victim’s family members informed that the burglars spent a lot of time inside the house as some cigarette butts were recovered from the spot. They have left behind imitation jewellery and some foreign currency that were kept in the cupboard.

Bhubaneswar DCP had earlier informed that an anti-burglary squad was constituted to put a check on incidents of burglaries in the city.

This latest theft has raised considerable concern among residents regarding the security in the area.

It is pertinent to mention here that there has been a spurt in incidents of burglaries and thefts in various localities and apartments in Bhubaneswar in the past several months.

The back-to-back incidents of burglaries have unleashed terror, particularly among the people staying in apartments which were once considered a safe option owing to the deployment of security guards and other surveillance mechanisms.

Earlier, four unoccupied duplex homes in City Home Duplex under the Pahala police limits were targeted by unidentified miscreants during the night of December 9, and early hours of December 10.

The miscreants had allegedly looted gold and diamond jewellery along with cash amounting to over Rs 20 lakh.
