A love story, which began on social media platform Instagram, allegedly ended in a gruesome murder at Hindol in Dhenkanal.
The police on Thursday evening arrested the father-in-law and brother-in-law of the deceased person on charges of murder and subsequently produced them in court.
As per allegations, Sagar Barik, son of Bijay Barik, a resident of Doval village in Jagatsinghpur district, and Debasmita Nayak, daughter of Bijay Nayak of Rupali village under Hindol NAC in Dhenkanal district first met each other on a social media platform. Days later, they fell in love and got married.

After the marriage, they were first living in Balasore and then started living in Rupali village in March 2023.
Three days ago, Sagar’s family members came to know that their son had been murdered and the body was burned in a bid to destroy evidence. They lodged a complaint at Hindol Police Station. In their complaint, they alleged that their son was murdered, his kidney was taken out and sold for Rs 40 lakh and the body was disposed of.
Based on the complaint, Hindol Police registered a case and launched a probe. Meanwhile, a scientific team visited the place where the body was found, collected some pieces of bones and ash, and sent them to the laboratory for tests.
When asked, the police said the scientific report would help them solve the case.
After the preliminary investigation, the police arrested Bijay Nayak and his son on Thursday evening and produced them in court.
Debasmita, who is said to be the prime accused in the case, is on the run.
“They had alleged that Sagar Barik was killed by his wife, brother-in-law, and father-in-law. After registering a case, an investigation was launched. During the investigation, it was learned that they had disposed of the dead body. So, the cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. Based on material evidence and circumstantial evidence, we arrested two accused and forwarded them to court,” said Hindol Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO).
