A kidnapping bid of a retired teacher was foiled by irate locals in Deogarh on Sunday after the car used for abducting the teacher caused a series of accidents after enduring a tyre puncture.
The locals nabbed two miscreants with deadly weapons and thrashed them black and blue. Later, they handed over the kidnappers to the police.
As per reports, Rabindra Sahu, a retired teacher hailing from Kamlanga village of Keonjhar district, was returning from Jharsuguda to his home in a four-wheeler today. He stepped down from the vehicle near a toll gate in Kalla village of Deogarh district to attend nature's call.
Three armed miscreants abducted him at gunpoint and forced him to sit in the back seat of his car. While one of the miscreants settled beside him pointing a gun on his head, another youth was driving the car.
The miscreant hit Sahu with a dagger and gun and snatched his credit card and bounced back again after learning that there was no money in the bank account. Later, the abductors instructed Sahu to ask his son to transfer funds to his account.
In the midway, the vehicle's tyre punctured but they kept on moving. They also hit several other vehicles on the way for which some youths followed the car.
However, they had to stop the vehicle near Telkoi's Nuadiha area to replace the tyre as it was not in a condition to move further.
"They abducted me on gunpoint and dragged me inside the car. They snatched my credit card and cash. After learning that I had no funds in the bank, they hit me and instructed me to ask my son for transferring Rs 3 lakh," said Sahu.
"The person driving the car was drunk and was driving the car recklessly. He also rammed into several other vehicles on road and finally was forced to stop for replacing the punctured tyre," he added.
At the same time, the youths following the vehicle along with some other locals of the area surrounded them and captured the abductors. They hit them black and blue and later handed them over to the police.
While a dagger was seized from the car, the gun was missing from the spot. Moreover, one of the three miscreants was able to flee the spot.
Prima facie, the miscreants are habitual offenders and are from Talcher sub-division of Angul district.
