A team of Excise officials on Thursday stumbled upon over a whopping 100 kg of silver bricks, ornaments and around Rs 14 lakh cash while carrying out a raid near Tangi toll gate.
All the silver bricks weighing over 100 kgs and cash was recovered from a secret chamber of a car which was on its way to Kharagpur from Aska. There were multiple secret chambers in the car which has also raised suspicion that the vehicle might be engaged in illegal transportation or smuggling of ornaments and other products.
Two persons, who have been detained in connection with the seizure of silver bricks, ornaments and cash, have informed that it is for the second time that they were engaged in transportation of the goods.
A person used to provide them Rs 1,000 per day in this regard and Rs 3,000 after completion of the job. As it is suspected that the silver bricks could be decoy to smuggle gold, GST and other police officials for further investigation.
“One Amit Majhi had asked me to deliver the goods. I am just paid Rs 3,000 for the job apart from Rs 1000 per day,” said one the accused who has been detained.
A senior excise official said, “We had raided on suspicion of illegal ganja transportation. As cash and silver bricks and ornaments have been seized, we have informed GST officials for necessary investigation.”
