In a significant cybercrime breakthrough, the Odisha Crime Branch has arrested a key accused from Punjab in connection with a Rs 7.5 crore online investment fraud. 

The arrest follows a detailed investigation into a complaint filed by a victim from Jeypore who was duped by fraudsters posing as investment advisors.

According to Crime Branch sources, the complainant was persuaded to invest in IPO and OTC trading with promises of high returns. Initially convinced, he ended up transferring Rs 7.5 crore over a period of time. 

However, when he attempted to withdraw his investment, the fraudsters demanded additional payments and refused to release the funds. Realizing he had been scammed, the victim approached the cyber police. A case was registered on December 6, 2024, in this regard.

A special team led by Inspector Namita Kumari Sahu of the CID CB Cyber Crime PS, Odisha, tracked the digital trail to Sangrur in Punjab. The team apprehended Amrit Pal, son of one Karnal Singh, from Uppil Road, near Sangrur Gurdwara. He was produced in Sangrur Court and brought to Jeypore after securing a transit remand.

Amrit Pal now faces multiple charges under BNS Sections 318, 319, 336, 338, 340, and 61 as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. 

Further investigation is underway to identify other operatives and recover the defrauded money.
