The case involving the mysterious disappearance of four engineering students from Bhubaneswar took a strange turn on Tuesday with reports confirming that they were actually picked up by police for questioning over their suspected links with the notorious ‘Jamtara gang’ of cyber criminals.
The four students, all belonging to Jharkhand, are studying in a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar and reportedly went missing from Khandagiri area since February 11, 2022.
According to sources, the Ainthapali police in Sambalpur district picked them up for questioning over their alleged links with a member of the Jamtara gang. The police zeroed in on them while tracking the member of the infamous gang of cyber frauds.
All the four were living in a rented accommodation in the Kalinga Vihar area under Tamando Police limits in Bhubaneswar. After their sudden disappearance, the anxious family members had lodged complaints with the Tamando police.
The parents had also met the Twin City Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police suspecting that they were kidnapped and urged the officials to take necessary action to trace them.
Speaking about case, DCP Umashankar Das said, “Following complaints from the parents of the students, we formed a team and later learnt that they were in Sambalpur. They had gone to Sambalpur with another youth. We are yet to ascertain if the fifth person has any links with the Jamtara gang.”
“Our main target was to trace the missing students after their parents expressed apprehension of kidnapping. As they have been traced, the Sambalpur police can now reveal details. We are also in touch with the Sambalpur police,” Dash added.
