In an inhumane incident, a man was garlanded with slippers and tied in front of a moving truck as a punishment for allegedly stealing a mobile phone at Paradip on Tuesday.
The video of the cruel incident has gone viral on various social media platforms.
As per reports, the incident happened near Bhatamundai are along Chandikhol-Paradip road in Jagatsinghpur District.
The man was caught by a truck driver and helpers when he was trying to flee after allegedly stealing a mobile phone from the vehicle.
In an act on punishment for the offence, they tied him in front of the truck and garlanded him with slippers. Subsequently, they drove the truck for 15-20 minutes. They also beat the accused black and blue before setting him free.
A local resident reportedly shot a video of the incident which has gone viral on various social media platforms.
No police complaint has been lodged in this connection so far.
“These kinds of stealing incidents are happening in the area recurrently. However, police have not been able to take any actions against the culprits yet despite several complaints. The drivers and helpers were forced to take law in their own hands out of frustration because of police inaction,” said a villager.
Meanwhile, taking strong suo motu cognizance of the incident, the Odisha Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Jagatsinghpur SP to initiate and enquiry into the matter and submit a report within fifteen days from the date of receipt of this order (today May 24).
