The Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) in Sambalpur has directed the Town Police to submit a status report on the investigation into the sensational Jayshree murder case that happened in 2011.
The SDJM’s order came in the wake of a direction from the Orissa High Court. The investigating officer (IO) has been asked to produce the status report within 15 days.
Jayashree, a resident of Nandapada of Sambalpur was murdered in 2011. It was alleged that the police carried out the probe half-heartedly and even tried to hush up the case.

However, the daughter of the deceased, Bijayini approached the DGP, Odisha and lodged a complaint with him following which the district police arrested the accused, eight years after the incident. The police registered a murder case and the prime accused Basant Panda was rounded up on July 22, 2019.
Basant happens to be a close relative of the victim, reports stated.
He had killed the woman and buried the body, police said. The skull and skeletal remains of the deceased were exhumed later. The entire proceedings were carried out by forensic experts in the presence of a magistrate.
During interrogation, Basant had also admitted to have committed the crime.
On the fateful day in 2011, Jayashree had gone out to distribute invitation cards for the marriage her elder daughter and did not return home.
Her daughter had lodged a missing complaint with police. But, no steps were taken to trace the whereabouts of the missing woman. Rather, police had tried to hush of the case saying that she had eloped with someone, daughter of the deceased Bijayini alleged.
