Six members of a family sustained severe injuries in an explosion while making firecrackers inside a house at Beruhabadi village under Kodala police limits in Ganjam district on Wednesday.

All the injured were rushed to Kodala hospital. However, as the condition of five among them deteriorated, they were shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment. All the five grievously injured persons are stated to have received 50 per cent burn injuries.  

According to sources, Dandapani Behera of Beruhabadi village used to make firecrackers from gunpowder. Explosion took place while making firecrackers due to carelessness injuring six of the family. The sound of explosion was so loud that villagers could not exactly figure out what happened and started running hither to thither.

Acting on a complaint, Purusottampur Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), additional superintendent of police and Kodala police reached the spot and started investigation. 

In a judgement Orissa High Court had made it clear that only Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) approved green crackers would be allowed in Odisha. The Court had directed police and district administrations to initiate action against people in case of violation of the order.

Police are investing on which condition Behera was making firecrackers in violation of High Court order.
