Impersonating an IPS Officer, a cyber criminal allegedly duped a resident of Jatni in Khordha district and swindled Rs 71,000 from him.
According to sources Jatni-based Benudhara Muduli fell prey to cyber fraud and lost Rs 71,000.
Benudhar reportedly got a nude video call from an unidentified number on his social media. A few hours after getting that video call, Benudhar again got a call from another unknown number.
Identifying himself a Delhi-based IPS officer, he told Benudhar that he had kept the nude video call recording of him with the girl.
Again, the impersonator threatened to lodge a complaint against him. And if he wanted to get rid of it, he told Benudhar to provide Rs 1.5 lakh. Finding no other go, Benudhar had to deposit Rs 71,000 in four installments.
The matter came to light after Benudhar filed a complaint with cyber police.
Benudhar said, “The impersonator demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for not circulating my video. However, I gave him Rs 71,000 fearing arrest.”
Of late, Odisha has been witnessing an increase in cyber crime with three fresh cases being reported from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack frequently. Three persons in the twin cities have allegedly been duped of around Rs 10 lakh by cyber criminals in the month of September.
Keeping the spurt of cyber crime cases in mind, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Bhubaneswar Prateek Singh has recently released a video advising people to stay alert and not to fall prey to cyber frauds, especially during this festive season.
