Despite a large-scale awareness drive, cyber crimes in the State are rampant what with fraudsters coming up with different unique techniques to dupe internet users. The recent victim is an engineer from Odisha who received a shock of his life time after falling in the traps of the fraudsters.
According to sources, an engineer working with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Bhubaneswar has fallen prey to a nude video call trap laid by cyber fraudsters and lost Rs 25 lakh from his bank account following blackmail.
The catfish first sent a message to the engineer on WhatsApp. Later, the fraudster hatched a nude video call plan to trap him, sources informed adding that, the scamster started blackmailing the engineer impersonating self as a CBI officer.
Fearing humiliation in the society, the engineer paid Rs 25 lakh to the fraudster.
“I did not know the person who texted me on WhatsApp. After receiving the message, I got a video call on WhatsApp. When I received it I found the person nude and soon I disconnected the call. Later, the fraudster morphed the screenshot taken during the video call and started blackmailing me,” said the victim.
Meanwhile, the cyber police has launched a probe into the matter after the victim lodged a complaint in this regard.
According to cyber police, of the total cyber crimes, over 30 per cent victims fall prey to the nude video call trap of the scamsters.
