Despite the stringent enforcement of law, Bhubaneswar seems to have become a hunting ground for criminals as the State Capital witnessed a steep rise in criminal activities in the last 11 months.
According to the crime statistics released by the Commissionerate Police on Monday, 32 murder, 108 rape and 1,880 theft cases have been registered in Bhubaneswar in the last 11 months.
Similarly, 277 suicide cases have been reported in the Smart City of which most of the victims are men, the record stated. While 94 men ended their lives by hanging themselves, the number stands at 41 for women.
While the maximum 68 suicide cases have been reported from Khandagiri area, a low of 2 cases each were registered in Tamando and Airport police limits, the record stated.
Similarly, the city reported 547 loot, 426 house breaking, 791 cheating case during that period.
“Every year around 2.5 lakh people commit suicide in India. Is there no solution to that? Depression and stress are two very dangerous words. Over 10 per cent of world’s total population is suffering from depression,” said Pratap Rath, a psychologist while commenting on the suicides reported in the Capital city so far this year.
