Bhubaneswar Firing Incident
In a dramatic twist to a reported shooting incident, Balipatna police on Sunday revealed that the gunshot wound sustained by a man was not an act of external violence, but a self-inflicted injury staged as part of a revenge plot. The injured individual, identified as Deeptiranjan Mohapatra, had allegedly orchestrated the entire episode in a bid to frame the husband of a rape survivor.
What Probe Revealed?
According to police sources, Deeptiranjan had been arrested in connection in an alleged rape case last year. The victim’s husband, who had actively pursued justice in the matter, had since become a target of Deeptiranjan’s animosity.
Driven by a desire for revenge, Deeptiranjan had allegedly hatched a plan to falsely implicate the man by creating a scene that would suggest he had been shot by him.
On the day of the incident, Deeptiranjan reportedly stood in front of the victim's house and shot himself in the arm using a firearm, attempting to make it appear like an attack.
The sound of gunfire triggered panic in the neighborhood, and Deeptiranjan was immediately rushed to the hospital with a bleeding injury. Police launched an investigation into what initially appeared to be a possible assault. However, inconsistencies in his statements and a swift probe led police to the truth.
Upon further questioning and forensic evidence, it was revealed that the bullet trajectory did not match an external attack. Investigators also identified the person who had provided Deeptiranjan with the gun, and that individual has since been arrested.
Deeptiranjan is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. Police have stated that he will be taken into custody once his health improves. Meanwhile, legal proceedings are underway against both Deeptiranjan and the man who supplied the weapon.
