Eight years after a doctor couple was brutally murdered at Sailashree Vihar in Bhubaneswar, the Second Additional Sessions Judge Court on Thursday sentenced five accused, including two women, to life imprisonment.
After examining 23 witnesses and perusing evidence, the judge held the five guilty and awarded the punishment.
The crime was committed on November 15, 2015. It was the birthday of Dr Sushama Mishra, wife of Dr Prafulla Mishra. On her return from the temple, they found dacoits inside their house. When the couple resisted, the miscreants attacked them with sharp weapons, leading to their deaths.

In this case, the key accused were the two women whom the couple had employed as domestic help.
“Subhra Mishra, the daughter-in-law of the couple, had seen the five accused near the house and also identified them at the TI parade. The fingerprints of the two accused identified as Muna alias Kamal Khan and Timpha were also collected from the crime scene. After considering the circumstantial evidence, the Second Additional Sessions Judge has awarded life imprisonment to all five accused and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of them,” said public prosecutor Ajit Patnaik.
