An assistant accountant posted at the divisional office of the lift irrigation department in Sonepur district has been accused of embezzling over Rs 1 crore. As per the allegations, the assistant accountant, identified as Balram Meher had joined the department as an outsourcing staff in 2014. It is alleged that Meher allegedly transferred and embezzled around Rs 1.19 crore.

On getting information, senior officials of the departments reached the divisional office and started an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, questions are being raised on how the department officials were not aware of the fund transfer.

When contacted, the executive engineer refused to comment on the matter.
