In a major incident of dacoity, unidentified miscreants broke into the Odisha Gramya Bank at Khaprapada Square under Baliapal police limits in Balasore district and looted cash worth lakhs. According to sources, the loot took place late Sunday night.
The robbers managed to break open the window of the bank using gas cutters and entered to commit the loot. It was not immediately known if the robbers had also tampered with the CCTV camera installed inside the bank.
The robbers have fled with cash worth lakhs. The exact amount stolen will be ascertained after verification by bank officials.
The matter came to the fore after locals spotted the broken window and alerted the bank manager and local cops. On being informed, local police rushed to the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the miscreants.
Similar loot had happened in the same bank five years ago. Lack of police patrolling has led to a rise in crimes in the area, locals alleged.
No comments could be obtained from the police or the bank manager in this connection.
