In an unfortunate turn out of events, a youth allegedly hacked to death an electricity meter reader at Kupati village in Ganjam district. The incident has sent shockwaves in the area.
As per initial reports, the accused youth, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, attacked the meter reader as he was aggrieved over the high electricity bill. The deceased meter reader has been identified as Laxminarayan Tripathy.
It is pertinent to mention here that there was a dispute between Laxminarayan and the accused in the past over the electricity bill.
A heated argument ensued when Laxminarayan reached the house of the consumer on Monday. In a fit of rage, the consumer attacked Laxminarayan leading to his death.
Following the incident, Police reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter. The accused is said to be absconding after the incident.
In a statement, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) extended condolences to the family members of the deceased meter reader.
“As a gesture of deep concern and in recognition of his invaluable contributions, we have instructed to the agency to pay compensation of 16 lack for his family. Additionally, it was also instructed to ensure the employment of the legal heir of the deceased with the associate agency,” a company statement read.
TPSODL further said, “Our commitment to the safety of our employees and Business Associates remains steadfast. We will collaborate with local communities and authorities to maintain a secure working environment.”
