In a significant development, authorities in Southern Similipal have utilised artificial intelligence (AI) cameras to capture images leading to the arrest of poachers. This technological intervention has facilitated the arrest of two individuals, while three others remain at large.
The poachers have been identified as Rajkishore Nayak and Kalicharan Dehuri, both residents of Nachhipur village), situated under the Kaptipada police station limits.
The use of AI technology underscores a progressive approach in wildlife protection efforts, aiming to curb illegal poaching activities that threaten biodiversity in the region.
During the enforcement operation, local authorities confiscated five locally-made firearms, deer and sambar hides, and several bows and arrows. The accused now faces multiple charges under the Wildlife Protection Act and for illegal possession of firearms.
Following the operation, the Southern Similipal Wildlife Division produced the apprehended accused before the Baripada Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court. ‘
Senior officials informed that the duo would be brought on remand for further interrogation in the case.
Earlier the incident of poaching of a rare melanistic tiger in Similipal forest had raised questions on the ongoing measures to protect the big cats in Odisha.
