The Commissionerate Police nabbed Papuni Rout, who was absconding after throwing acid on his wife near Dhauli in August this year, from Gujarat on Friday. The arrest was made by a special team which went to the western Indian state on Rout’s trail following a tip off.
DCP Bhubaneswar, Umashankar Dash said that Rout had splashed acid on his wife following a scuffle on August 11. Later, top evade arrest he went to Gujarat where he picked up odd jobs to eke out a living. He said Rout, who hails from Nimapara in Puri district, was nabbed from Gujarat following a detailed investigation by Dhauli police.

Preliminary investigation reveals that both the accused and the victim were into a relationship and later got married before a notary. “However, Rout was reluctant to take the victim to his home and would make excuses,” said Dash.
On the day of incident, Rout had called the victim to visit Dhauli. The victim went to the place along with a friend. Following a tiff, the accused allegedly threw acid on her and ran away.
“The Commissionerate Police took the case with all seriousness. After conducting raids at multiple locations, we got credible inputs on the location of the accused who was subsequently arrested from Gujarat. The accused has been booked under IPC Section 326 (A) under which he could be handed down 10 years jail term or life imprisonment which is equivalent to the quantum of punishment in a murder case, as per the amended law,” said Dash.
Dash further said that the remnants of acid from the bottle used by the accused have been sent for examination and further investigation into the case is underway.
