The government railway police (GRP), Bhubaneswar on Wednesday seized 32 kg of gold jewellery which was being transported to Bhubaneswar from Mumbai via a train.
Four persons have been detained for questioning in this connection.
GRP sources said that the gold ornaments were being transported by the four persons who were travelling in the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express.
The four persons who were carrying the gold items have been identified by the police as Hasmukhlal Jain, Surseh Sahadev Khare, Mahesh Bhomsar and Deepak Patel. All of them hail from Mumbai.
“The four persons brought the gold ornaments from Mumbai to sell them to traders in and around Bhubaneswar. We zeroed in on them due to their suspicious activities,” Chandrasekhar Sahu, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Khordha Road Zone (GRP) said while briefing the media.
“They evaded tax. So far, they have not disclosed who their perspective buyers are,” Sahu said.
The detained persons admitted that they had earlier brought gold jewellery to Bhubaneswar and sold to local traders. Further investigation is underway in the case.
