India has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 deaths due to the ongoing audit of the unreported fatalities across the country, said a senior health expert.
Speaking to media persons, Dr Niraj Mishra said that the COVID-19 death graph is in an upward trend for now even though there is a downward trend in the positive cases due to the audit of the unreported deaths.
"Death cases could not be reported timely from some places, especially in case of deaths at homes and at private hospitals. So, all those fatalities will be properly audited and added. The recent rise in the death cases due to COVID-19 is due to the addition of the old fatalities," said Mishra.

Maharashtra had earlier taken the same initiative, Bihar followed it and now several other states are following the same. The audit will help present the actual death figure due to Coronavirus, he claimed.
“If you want to save your life, the best thing is vaccine. The chances of succumbing to the virus decreases to below 20 per cent if you have already taken both the doses of COVID vaccine,” said Mishra.
There is no need to fear if one gets fever after vaccination. It can be cured by taking paracetamol, said Mishra while adding that there is a chance of further spread of the virus in rain and cold condition.
Today, India reported 80,834 new Covid-19 cases and 3,303 deaths due to the virus. India's overall tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,94,39,989 with 10,26,159 active cases and 3,70,384 deaths so far.
On the other hand, in Odisha, the daily Covid-19 positives further dipped today as the State witnessed 4,469 new cases on Sunday. With this, the positive tally in the State has surged to 8,51,782.
However, the fatalities due to Covid-19 continue to surge in the State. At least 45 patients undergoing treatment for Covid-19 succumbed to the disease on Sunday, taking the death toll to 3,302.
