Cuttack: A special Drugs Control squad on Friday claimed to have seized nearly 17,000 counterfeit anti-viral drug Favipiravir, prescribed for Covid treatment, following a raid in Cuttack.
As per reports, the drugs consignment, packed in 170 boxes, was seized from a chemist shop located at Kanika Chhak in the millennium city.
“The raids are continuing since yesterday. So far, we have seized 170 boxes of spurious Favipiravir tablets,” said State Drugs Controller, Annada Sankar Das.

According to Das, the raid was conducted based on some intelligence input regarding the sale of such counterfeit drugs.
The spurious medicines were seized before the stock was released in the open market in Odisha.
Preliminary probe indicates that the owner of the medicine store has sent parts of the stock to Gwalior.
“We have already informed the Madhya Pradesh government about the incident for appropriate action,” said Das.
The State Drugs Controller further informed that the spurious Favipiravir medicines were procured from Uttar Pradesh by the concerned medicine store in Cuttack.
“Our investigation is still underway. We will discuss the matter with the Uttar Pradesh government. We will send samples of the seized spurious Favipiravir tablets for tests,” Das added.
