Dutee Chand, Odisha's celebrated sprinter narrowly escaped a tragic car accident near OMP Chhak in Cuttack, on her journey back to Bhubaneswar from Jajpur. The incident unfolded when a truck collided with her vehicle, causing considerable damage to her car.
Remarkably, Dutee was able to pursue the truck, eventually bringing it to a standstill near the Kathajori Bridge after the driver attempted to flee the scene. Upon contacting the authorities, the Madhupatna Police Station promptly responded. Officers seized the truck and took the driver into custody for questioning.
Dutee, accompanied by a friend during the incident, claimed the driver not only hit her vehicle but also engaged in shouting verbal abuses and exhibiting inappropriate behaviour.
The sprinter emerged unscathed, but the event has raised concerns over road safety and driver conduct, highlighting the challenges faced by motorists across bustling roads.
“We were on our way to Bhubaneswar from Jajpur. A truck driver was honking at us near OMP Square, just before reaching Cuttack Link Road. We looked out of the window and saw him abusing us. We gave him way, but he intentionally hit our vehicle and tried to speed away. Later, I chased him and stopped him near Kathajori Bridge. I then called PCR who swiftly reached the spot and protected us,” Dutee stated.
“The driver has been detained and his vehicle has also been seized. The way he intentionally hit our vehicle, I’m safe only because we were on a BMW. The situation would have been worse if it was some other vehicle,” Dutee alleged.
